Biological Resources and Related Legislation

The Biological Diversity Act (BDA) came into force in 2002 with the aim of providing a legal framework for the conservation and management of India’s rich biological heritage. Its primary objectives are:

  • To ensure the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources;

  • To regulate access to biological resources and associated traditional knowledge; and

  • To facilitate the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of these resources and knowledge with the local and indigenous communities.
